In 2006, a visiting American skater named Black Dahlia brought her skates to Aotearoa and planted the seeds of a movement. From that moment, Pirate City Rollers (PCR) became the first roller derby league in the Southern Hemisphere, sparking a fierce and fearless community right here in Auckland.
PCR paved the way in New Zealand derby:
First NZ league to become a WFTDA apprentice member (2011)
First to achieve full WFTDA membership (2013)
First NZ team to qualify for WFTDA Division 2 Playoffs in the USA (2017)
Meanwhile, Auckland Roller Derby League (ARDL) was building its own legacy — a tight-knit, inclusive league with a focus on sustainable growth, fierce competition, and supporting every skater to thrive.
ARDL’s values were clear:
Grow the sport in Aotearoa
Build a diverse, welcoming community
Develop the next generation of tenacious, talented skaters
Compete at the highest levels with heart and grit
In 2025, the two Auckland leagues united to create a new force in New Zealand roller derby:
Volcanic City Rollers.
We’re skater-run, not-for-profit, and community-powered. We honour the legacy of our founding leagues while looking firmly to the future. We aim to grow a league that’s competitive, inclusive, and sustainable — one where everyone has the chance to thrive, no matter their role.
Whether you’re lacing up for the first time, rejoining the pack, officiating, volunteering, or screaming from the stands, we’ve got space for you.
We back each other on and off the track. We push each other to grow. We celebrate wins together, and we pick each other up after falls — literally and figuratively.
We are proudly diverse. We welcome all identities, bodies, and backgrounds. Everyone contributes to the success of the league, and everyone matters.
We are always learning, improving, and developing — as athletes, as teammates, and as people.
We bring the heat. We are fierce, competitive, and passionate. When we roll, we roll deep.
